AAO Advocacy

Sunir Garg, MD

The Macula Society remains active in the American Academy of Ophthalmology Council.  Our goal is to advocate for issues that are important to our Society and specialty.  Recently, we’ve supported legislation to help address drug shortages, as well as to advocate for changes to preauthorization requirements for Medicare Advantage plans.

The Macula Society also works with the AAO to review the Preferred Practice Patterns that are retina focused, offering the expertise of our members to provide ophthalmologists with most current and accurate assessments available.

Finally, the Macula Society Executive Committee continues to support advocacy on behalf of our profession and our patients.  The Macula Society consistently donates to the Surgical Scope Fund.  In a newer initiative, we proudly supported three retina fellows to attend the Mid-Year Forum.  This is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about advocacy and includes a trip to Capitol Hill to meet with our elected representatives.
